I just traded a Hercules pulley for a Hall valve seat grinder. It came in it's original cabinet with all the pilots and a few stones. It also has a wrench for removing the pilots and a dial indicator tool to be sure the seat being ground is concentric. I also have Sioux seat grinder, it came with my Sioux valve grinding machine, which is a GREAT machine, I don't like the Sioux seat grinder at all, there's no control, no variable speed on the electric driver. It works ok but I feel it's just a poor design. The Hall works GREAT!
The depth can be controlled easily and the stone oscillate's around the seat and leaves a nice finish. Do any of you own one of these?
Like it,hate it?? Anything I should look for, as far as maintenance? Any tips on using it? Does anyone know where I can buy stones?
I valued the pulley at $75.00, did I do OK on price? I checked there website, and when I try to look at products, I get a message saying 'this portion still under construction' I checked Goodson and a few other aftermarket sources and no one sells stones for the Hall. It has 6 stones with it but they all have cracks except for one, can they still be used with cracks? I googled 'Hall valve seat grinder' and one of the search results was a discussion page much like this one only dealing in antique cars, and there were several people saying they can't find replacement stones, several people said they called the number listed for Hall and got a machine and had to leave a message, which was never returned. No one complained about it's performance, in fact, I haven't seen one negative comment about it's operation anywhere!
I'm currently working on a 3hp Fairbanks Morse ignitor Z engine, I ground the seats, and the Hall worked beautifully, it is far better than the Sioux I was using, the Sioux seems so primitive after using the Hall, but the bottom line is, there are several sources for stones for the Sioux, so far, I can't find one for the Hall. I just started a Yahoo Group for the Hall-Toledo Model EJ Eccentric Valve Seat Grinder.
I have 7 PDF type manuals for this machine that I took the time to scrub and clean to make them like new more important readable. These manuals go back as far as the 1940's and a few from the mid to late 1950's and some from the 1980's. I also found some wire tag type cards that were more than likely fastened to it when it was new, those have been scanned to a PDF format as well.
These documents are provided free of charge. Regards, Jack.
