WOWZA friends! After a nail-biting day of professional development with my first grade teammates from across the district, I felt I needed some restructuring in the Common Core department. These modules include authentic reading materials. Authentic reading materials include published works that are typically encountered by students in daily life, such as in magazines, books or newspapers. The use of authentic reading material may mean that some material is emotionally charged or may use language outside of a student's particular cultural experience.
5th Grade Ela Pacing Guide
Teachers in grades K- 5 are utilizing Mathematics modules from EngageNY. Curriculum modules in mathematics are marked by in-depth focus on fewer topics. They integrate the CCLS, rigorous classroom reasoning, extended classroom time devoted to practice and reflection through extensive problem sets, and high expectations for mastery. The time required to complete a curriculum module will depend on the scope and difficulty of the mathematical content that is the focus of the module (first priority cluster area for a given grade level). For example, the curriculum module relating to Grade 3 multiplication and division introduces initial ideas of multiplication and division in a brief period at the start of the year, continues to develop strategies and problem solving throughout the year, and includes materials to be used throughout the year for helping students reach fluency by the end of the year with single-digit multiplication and related division. Is a comprehensive Kindergarten to Grade 6 mathematics program developed to support the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. It will be utilized in grades K to 6 during the 201 6 – 201 7 school year. Teachers in Grades 6-8 are utilizing GoMath. Grades K – 2 will continue using Core Knowledge for English Language Arts. Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) is a comprehensive, preschool through fifth grade program for teaching reading, writing, listening, and speaking while also building students’ vocabulary and knowledge across essential domains in literature, global and American history, and the sciences. In the early grades, CKLA focuses on oral language development through carefully sequenced read-alouds as well as systematic instruction in reading and writing skills. In later grades, CKLA continues to advance students’ knowledge and vocabulary through read-alouds and in-depth discussions while also immersing students in complex texts and advanced writing assignments that draw on the academic content they’ve been engaged in since preschool.
Quarterly benchmark assessments using STAR Renaissance. School data inquiry teams will use assessments to monitor achievement and growth while identifying strengths and targeting areas of improvement. STAR assessments provide the most valid, reliable, actionable data in the least amount of testing time—usually 20 minutes or less. That empowers educators to focus on what matters most—individualizing instruction to accelerate learning for all students.
